Contact/Bio - Laureen Vellante Photography

Laureen Vellante grew up in New Jersey, USA and now resides in Rowayton, Connecticut where she raised her two daughters. Basically a self-taught photographer, Laureen has been freelancing as a photojournalist since 1988. Beginning as an agent for several top modeling agencies, she was influenced by the many photography masters she worked so closely with. Full of inspiration, she ambitiously began studying and talking courses at the School of Visual Arts, Maine Media Workshop, and ICP. She built a darkroom in her basement and began working for newspapers covering an array of topics from human interest and  architecture, to breaking news, political, business, and social events. Her current passion is in creating beautifully abstract images of seascapes and woods. Spending summers at the Jersey Shore and taking long daily walks through the woods inspired her love of the ocean and appreciation of the forest. Her first hand, personal encounters with Hurricanes Ike, Irene and Sandy and photographing the devastation they caused, propelled her into a new depth of creativity. Questioning, “How could something so gentle be so fierce?” she began to create images of the sea, sands and woodlands post destruction. She traveled to random locations up and down the coast, at different times of day, throughout each season, and in a variety of weather conditions. As Laureen began discovering the expanse of nature’s abstract wonder and juxtapositions: the moments of calm or ferociousness, fluidity or stillness, and the rich or barely distinguishable colors, she came to forgive nature’s wrath for all its uprooting, ever-changing mood swings and imminent rupture. This photographic journey reaffirmed the beauty of the seashore and the woods and birthed her ongoing body of works, “Whispering Waves” and “Woods Within”.
